Tennis ace Zverev reaches semi-finals in Montpellier

Montpellier – Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev easily reached the semi-finals of the Montpellier tournament. The 24-year-old from Hamburg won his quarter-final against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino with a superior 6:1, 6:0.

In the semi-finals, Zverev, the number 1 seed, will meet Sweden’s Mikael Ymer. The hard court tournament in the south of France is endowed with 490,990 euros.

Earlier, Zverev, who had already failed in the round of 16 to Canada’s Denis Shapovalov at the Australian Open a fortnight ago, announced that he would not play in the Davis Cup first round match in Rio de Janeiro on 4/5 March. “I am sad to miss the Davis Cup preliminary round in Brazil. Unfortunately, with two upcoming Masters tournaments on a different continent and surface, the venue and timing do not fit into my tournament schedule,” Zverev said in a statement.

The week after the Davis Cup match, the Masters 1000 event will be played in Indian Wells, after which the tennis stars will move on to Miami. Team manager Michael Kohlmann nominated Jan-Lennard Struff, Oscar Otte, Daniel Altmaier as well as the two doubles specialists Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz for the encounter on clay in Brazil.
