Ten world champions: DBB announces Olympic squad

World champion coach Gordon Herbert has already reduced his basketball squad ahead of the test match in Hamburg. There is no big surprise for Paris

Federal basketball coach Gordon Herbert has named his squad for Paris and is relying on ten world champions from last year for the Olympic Games. Only playmaker Justus Hollatz and David Krämer did not make it into the twelve-man squad from the title winners in Manila.

In addition to Hollatz and Krämer, the two big men Leon Kratzer and Louis Olinde were also omitted. Oscar da Silva and Nick Weiler-Babb, who missed the tournament in Asia due to injury, are new compared to the 2023 World Cup. However, according to the DBB, Hollatz will remain with the team and continue to train with them in order to be available as a replacement in the event of an injury.

The team is led by the NBA pros around captain Dennis Schröder. The two Wagner brothers Franz and Moritz and Daniel Theis are also back. Maodo Lo, Andreas Obst, Niels Giffey, Isaac Bonga and Niels Giffey are part of the squad, as they were last year. Johannes Thiemann from Alba Berlin has also been called up, although he was recently unable to play due to injury.

The national team will test against the Netherlands in Hamburg on Saturday (7.30 pm/Magentasport). Further tests will follow in Berlin against Japan and in London against the USA’s star team led by LeBron James. In the group phase of the basketball tournament in Lille, Germany will face Olympic hosts France with Victor Wembanyama, Japan and Brazil. The German team is a close contender for medals at the major event

The German Olympic squad:

Dennis Schröder (Brooklyn Nets), Daniel Theis (New Orleans Pelicans), Franz Wagner, Moritz Wagner (both Orlando Magic), Johannes Voigtmann, Maodo Lo (both Armani Milan), Nick Weiler-Babb, Andreas Obst, Niels Giffey, Oscar da Silva (Bayern Munich), Isaac Bonga (most recently Bayern Munich), Johannes Thiemann (Alba Berlin)
