Everton FC have been deducted ten points for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR). This was announced by the league on Friday. A reaction from the Toffees was not long in coming.
This news spread like wildfire on the island during the international break. Everton FC will be deducted ten points, meaning the club will slip from 14th to 19th place in the Premier League table and will only be ahead of bottom club Burnley by four points due to their better goal difference.
In a press release, Everton expressed their “shock and disappointment at the decision”. The Toffees see the decision as a “completely disproportionate and unjust sporting sanction”. The club will appeal against the decision in any case: “The appeal process will now commence and the club’s case will be heard in due course by an appeal panel appointed in accordance with Premier League rules. “
Everton said it had been “open and transparent” with the Premier League about misconduct and had always respected the “integrity of the process”. “Both the severity and the severity of the sanction imposed by the Commission do not fairly or adequately reflect the evidence presented,” the club continued. Decisions in all other cases concerning the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules will be “followed with great interest” by Everton.
Almost 20 million pounds above the threshold
The Premier League had already referred the club to an independent commission in March for breaches in the 2021/22 season. Everton had admitted to infringements in the season in question, but the extent of the infringement remained disputed. A five-day hearing then took place in October.
The commission came to the conclusion that “Everton FC’s PSR calculation for the period in question resulted in a loss of £124.5 million, as claimed by the Premier League, and therefore exceeded the £105 million threshold permitted under the PSR.” In the meantime, a fine or a transfer ban was on the cards – but the points deduction is likely to hit Everton even harder. The sanction is “effective immediately”, as the Premier League announced.
