Teenager Eala dupes Keys

The 19-year-old has brought her Philippine homeland a historic success.

19-year-old Alexandra Eala has made Philippine tennis history at the WTA tournament in Miami. With her sensational 6-4, 6-2 third-round victory over Australian Open winner and world number five Madison Keys (USA), the wild card starter became the first player from the Southeast Asian country to beat a top 10 player in the Open era.

“I hope this success helps tennis in the Philippines take the next step,” said the winner of the 2022 US Open junior tournament after advancing to the round of 16.

The next opponent of the talent, who has been training on the island of Mallorca at Rafael Nadal’s tennis academy for six years, is Paula Badosa of Spain.
