The US American Coco Gauff has underlined her ambitions for the US Open in New York from the end of August by winning the title at the WTA tournament in Cincinnati. The world number seven won the final against Czech Karolina Muchova 6:3, 6:4 one day after her semi-final victory over Polish world number one Iga Swiatek.
By winning her first WTA 1000 tournament, Gauff also became the first teenager since Canada’s Bianca Andreescu four years ago to complete a triple with three WTA tournament victories in one calendar year.
Before her success in Cincinnati, the 19-year-old had also triumphed at the tournaments in Auckland/New Zealand and Washington since the beginning of the year. The right-hander now has a total of five tournament victories to her name.
