Taekwondo: Aydin Wins Bronze

Ela Aydin has written a small chapter in German taekwondo history. In Paris, the sports soldier became the first woman from the German Taekwondo Union (DTU) to win a medal at a Grand Prix. Two years before the start of the Olympic Games in the French capital, Aydin won bronze in the 49 kg category on Friday.

“I have trained so much for this and now the knot has broken. Now I have this medal and Germany has this medal. I am so happy,” said Aydin (23). In the fight for bronze, she had prevailed against the Olympic silver medallist Adriana Cerezo from Spain.

The Grand Prix series in taekwondo, in which the best 32 athletes in each Olympic weight category compete against each other, has been around since 2013. In May, Aydin, who had narrowly failed to qualify for the Summer Games in Tokyo, had already won European Championship bronze in the 53 kg category in Manchester.
