Switzerland vs Iceland Preview: Team News and Betting Odds

The UEFA Nations League started this week with a number of games taking place yesterday including a goalless match between Germany and France and a resounding 4-1 victory for the Republic of Ireland. On Saturday, Switzerland takes on Iceland as they get their own Nations League campaign underway.

Iceland has gone from being considered minnows to genuine contenders with their outstanding efforts at the Euro 2016 tournament and their qualification for the World Cup. Their journey in Russia did not go quite so well though and they will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of not making it past the group stages, despite getting a draw against Argentina.

Switzerland did make it through to the group stages after two draws (against Brazil and Costa Rica) and a win over Serbia. They then were beaten 1-0 by Sweden to end their World Cup dreams.

Team news

Xherdan Shaqiri

The key players for each team are both playing their football in Liverpool. Xherdan Shaqiri signed for the Champions League finalists Liverpool in the summer, whilst Iceland’s Gylfi Sigurdsson plays for rivals Everton. Granit Xhaka and Shaqiri were at the centre of controversy in Russia for their goal celebration but they will be heavily relied upon tomorrow to get a result.

Switzerland team news

Shaqiri has found his game time at Liverpool limited, so he should be fresh and out with a point to prove to his manager. Michael Lang is out injured for Switzerland and the manager looks like he is concentrating on a younger set of players after leaving Dzemaili and Behrami out of the squad.
