Iga Świątek has won the WTA Finals in Cancún. She ends the tennis year as the best player in the world rankings.
Iga Świątek has won the WTA Finals in Cancún. In the final, the Polish player won 6:1, 6:0 against Jessica Pegula from the USA. The 22-year-old thus won the title at the WTA Finals for the first time and also regained first place in the world rankings. Swiatek has won her last eleven tennis matches this year.
In a completely one-sided match that lasted just 59 minutes, Świątek was the dominant player right from the start – and ice-cold in taking her chances. The four-time Grand Slam winner capitalized on both of her two break chances in the first round, meaning the first round was decided after just 27 minutes.
First break point for Pegula just before the end
Whoever had hoped for excitement in the second set of the well-attended final was disappointed. On the contrary. The Polish topspin player made short work of her opponent, who looked powerless and hit a number of balls into the net. 23 unforced errors in the entire match (only six for Świątek) illustrated the clear situation on the court.
Pegula earned her first ever break point in the very last game of the match. But Świątek fended it off before sinking her first match point shortly afterwards and sinking to the ground happily. For her, it was the first success at the WTA Finals in her career.
But there was also reason to celebrate on the German side in Mexico. Laura Siegemund was the first German to triumph in the doubles competition. The 35-year-old Swabian teamed up with Russian Vera Zvonareva to beat Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez from the USA and Australia 6:4, 6:4 in the final. Read more here
Due to the chaotic weather conditions in Cancún, both finals had to be played a day later than planned on Monday.
