Iga Swiatek misses out on the hoped-for triumph at the Summer Games. But she still makes tennis history for her country
After the tears of semi-final disappointment, Iga Swiatek won bronze at the Summer Games in France, the first Olympic medal in tennis for Poland. The world number one clearly won the match for third place in Paris 6:2, 6:1 against Anna Schmiedlova from Slovakia.
Swiatek had started the Olympic Games as the great gold favorite. However, the four-time French Open winner was defeated in the semi-finals by China’s Zheng Qinwen, against whom Angelique Kerber had previously narrowly lost the last match of her career. Zheng Qinwen will play Croatia’s Donna Vekic for gold in the underdog final on Saturday
