The first coach dismissal of the season is perfect: VfL Wolfsburg parted ways with Mark van Bommel on Sunday.
“At the end of the day, there were more separating factors than uniting ones. The conviction to get out of the difficult sporting situation in this constellation and to bring about a turnaround as quickly as possible was lacking and led us to the decision to end the cooperation. We wish Mark all the best in both his sporting and private life,” said VfL managing director Jörg Schmadtke.
“I am surprised and disappointed by the decision, because I am convinced that we could have managed to return to the road to success together. “
MARK VAN BOMMEL
“I am surprised and disappointed by the decision because I am convinced that together we could have managed to get back on track. I wish the team that they quickly manage to turn things around.”
It has not yet been decided who will now coach the Wolves.
Changing mistakes, record start, negative run
Mark van Bommel only succeeded Oliver Glasner, who left for Eintracht Frankfurt, at VfL Wolfsburg in the summer. His obligatory start failed, as he made a substitution error in injury time in the first round of the DFB Cup at regional league side Preußen Münster. The game, which the Wolves had actually won 3:1 after extra time, was subsequently rated 2:0 for Münster by the DFB sports court. But the VfL quickly put this unsuccessful start behind them: with four wins in the first four Bundesliga games (a club record), the Wolves initially lifted themselves to the top of the table.
Last three-goal win in Fürth on Matchday 4
But after VfL’s 2-0 win at promoted Fürth on Matchday 4, the break followed: since then, Wolfsburg have not walked off the pitch as winners in the eight competitive matches that followed (0 wins/3 draws/5 defeats). After Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at home to SC Freiburg, those responsible have now drawn the consequences.
