Supersport 300 World Championship at Portimao: heavy crash causes race to be abandoned

UPDATE: Victor Steeman is airlifted to hospital with head injuries after a crash on the third lap

A serious crash occurred in the first race of the Supersport 300 World Championship at the WSBK weekend in Portimao. Victor Steeman and Jose Perez Gonzalez collided in turn 14 on the third lap and the race was abandoned and not restarted for the time being.

According to initial information, Victor Steeman suffered a polytrauma and head injuries. The 22-year-old Dutchman was flown to Faro hospital.

As the helicopter was needed for the World Superbike Championship race, the start of Saturday’s race has been delayed.

UPDATE 19:50: From the side of WSBK promoter Dorna, Steeman’s condition is described in the evening as “continuing critical due to the serious injuries described”.
