Super League: ECJ ruling not expected until early 2023

Can a European Super League be established in football? The European Court of Justice has been dealing with this question since Monday. However, a ruling on this explosive matter is not expected until the beginning of 2023.

Real Madrid, Juventus Turin and FC Barcelona are sticking to their plan to create a Super League and had filed a lawsuit against UEFA and FIFA at a court in Madrid. The matter is currently before the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The oral hearing in the legal dispute in Luxembourg has been concluded, as the ECJ announced on Tuesday afternoon.

What happens next? The next step will be an opinion by an ECJ Advocate General, which is to be presented on 15 December. However, a judgement will probably only be issued weeks or months later.

The “European Superleague Company” had filed a complaint with a court in Madrid, which in turn appealed to the ECJ. In April 2021, twelve top European clubs announced the foundation of a Europe-wide league to compete with UEFA’s Champions League. After protests, all the clubs with the exception of Real, Barça and Juve withdrew from the plan.
