Successful US Open dress rehearsal: Sinner wins in Cincinnati

The world number one had to fight for more than three hours against Alexander Zverev. In the final against the American Frances Tiafoe, things went easier for Sinner

After his semi-final victory over Alexander Zverev, world number one tennis player Jannik Sinner has also won the ATP tournament in Cincinnati. The Italian won the final against the American Frances Tiafoe 7:6 (7:4), 6:2 and had far less trouble than in his duel with Zverev, against whom he had prevailed after a tough battle over 3:07 hours.

Sinner’s fifth tournament win of the year was a successful dress rehearsal for the US Open, which begins on Monday. The 23-year-old won his first Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open in January. However, the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz had triumphed most recently at the French Open and Wimbledon.

“It’s been a tough, tough week. I had a great run here. I’m very happy with the level I’m playing at – especially in the important moments,” said Sinner, who was troubled by hip problems during the tournament.
