German number two Jan-Lennard Struff has become the second German tennis pro to reach the quarter-finals at the ATP tournament in Munich. The Warstein native, seeded fourth and therefore given a bye in the opening round, beat Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 7:6 (7:0), 6:4. Earlier, Yannick Hanfmann from Karlsruhe had lost his round of 16 match to Marc-Andrea Hüsler from Switzerland 2:6, 4:6 – both matches were interrupted in the meantime due to rain.
“I’m brutally happy, I didn’t know whether we would be able to play,” said Struff. Due to the bad weather, it was initially unclear whether the match could continue or would have to be postponed until Friday. Struff was “happy that I got over the finishing line today”.
Struff played an even first set with his opponent, with both players winning their service games. The German dominated the tie-break and secured the set lead without conceding a point. He then took the first break of the match early on to make things seem clear, but let the Dutchman back into the match through careless errors before he hit back decisively. Struff will meet the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals on Friday.
Hanfmann had started his match in the best possible way and immediately took a service game from his opponent, but then immediately gave up the break again. After the forced break, the German only kept up for a short time, conceded the break again at 2:3 and finally gave up the first round clearly.
The world number 61 kept the second round open, created break chances himself, but failed to capitalize on them and finally broke decisively at 4:5 in the second set. Hüsler will now face the Danish top player Holger Rune, who is seeded second, in the quarter-finals
