Streich on changing clubs: “Not impossible, but very hard to imagine”

Christian Streich will celebrate his tenth anniversary on the bench of SC Freiburg in a few weeks. The 56-year-old does not want to rule out the possibility that he will coach another club one day – but it is not very likely.

Eight Bundesliga clubs alone started the 2021/22 season with a new coach – but the coach at SC Freiburg continued to be Christian Streich in the summer. As has been the case since 29 December 2011, when the 56-year-old officially took up his post at the Breisgau club. At the upcoming turn of the year, he will celebrate his tenth anniversary on the SCF bench. Saturday’s 1-2 defeat to FC Bayern was his 298th appearance on the SCF bench. He has long been one of the top ten coaches with the longest tenures in German professional football – and his rivals will probably not need to call him in the future either.

Streich: “Then I would be lying and I don’t want to do that “

“I don’t want to say it’s impossible, because then I would be lying and I don’t want that,” said Streich when asked about a possible change of club on the ZDF programme ‘Aktuelles Sportstudio’ on Sunday night:  “But it’s very hard to imagine me going somewhere else.”

This attitude also has an influence on the contract negotiations with the Freiburg officials. While it is not quite right that “I decide about my extension myself”,  Streich clarified. “We talk every year about whether we both want to continue with each other,” Streich reported. “One side still wants to, the other side still wants to – then everything is fine.”. As has always been the case over the past decade, most recently in February 2021 And when would anything change? “One side doesn’t want to anymore, the other side still wants to – then we part ways.”
