Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali assumes Mick Schumacher will remain in Formula 1 and stresses the importance of a German driver in Formula 1
Mick Schumacher’s future in Formula 1 remains uncertain. Although in theory there are still four cockpit vacancies at Alpine, Haas, Williams and AlphaTauri, the German is probably only a real candidate at his current team Haas as well as Williams, who announced just last week that they will not renew Nicholas Latifi’s contract for 2023.
For Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali, who also worked for Ferrari when Michael Schumacher was enjoying his greatest successes, it is clear that the Schumacher name must remain in Formula One, especially after the retirement of four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel, as the premier class would no longer feature a German driver for the first time since 1981.
Asked about this in an interview with ‘Der Spiegel’, Domenicali says: “Of course I care. Germany has always been a part of Formula One, and since the days of Michael Schumacher we know how important it is for a nation to be able to cheer on a hero, a champion. “
“We are experiencing this with Max Verstappen and the Dutch. So I really hope that Mick Schumacher will also find a cockpit in Formula 1 for next year. He would deserve it,” said the Formula 1 boss.
Domenicali: Schumacher has “the necessary professionalism “
Domenicali is not just concerned with Schumacher’s name or nationality, but that the Haas driver deserves to stay in Formula One after his recent better performances: “Absolutely. He has shown that he has the necessary professionalism. I am sure that he will prove his abilities until the end of the season and that the name Schumacher will remain in Formula 1!”
For Sky expert Ralf Schumacher it is also clear that his nephew Mick must stay in Formula 1, as he emphasises in an interview on the YouTube channel of Formel1.de. In his opinion, it would also not make too much sense for teams like Haas and Williams to sign up experienced drivers like Daniel Ricciardo or Nico Hülkenberg.
“The curve is definitely pointing in the right direction now, and any team boss who doesn’t have Mick on his mind is, in my opinion, making a huge mistake,” says Schumacher and emphasises: “If I were a team boss, there would be no question about who I would take when I look around at the moment at who is on the market.
