Statement from the Old Firm: Rangers inflict first defeat on Celtic

On Thursday, a very special football match was once again scheduled in Scotland: In the Old Firm, Glasgow Rangers made a big statement and won 3-0 against league leaders Celtic.

Glasgow Rangers last won the Scottish league title in 2021. Since then, Celtic, who previously won the title nine times, have taken back control of the league. In the last three years, the green-and-white Bhoys have also celebrated at the end of the season.

Brendan Rodgers’ team has been playing extremely well again this year and went into the prestigious Old Firm on Thursday unbeaten. In 18 league games, the league leaders have recorded a whopping 16 wins and two draws. But this flawless record is now history, because Rangers had a very strong day and deservedly beat their rivals 3-0.

Hagi put the hosts in front after just seven minutes with a well-placed shot into the right corner. After the break, Pröpper added a 66th-minute tap-in and Danilo a 81st-minute finish from close range to make the final score.

Second defeat of the season for Celtic

The faces of the guests were long as they left the field as losers for the first time in the league. Celtic had already suffered a defeat in the Champions League, the clear 1-7 at Borussia Dortmund.

Rangers, who won an Old Firm for the first time since May 2023, thus made a statement and at least made up some ground. However, Celtic still sit at the top of the table with a very comfortable 11-point lead. Rangers are next in action on Sunday (1 p.m.) at Hibernian Edinburgh, while Celtic play later that day (4 p.m.) against St. Mirren.
