The anticipation at FC Teutonia 05 Ottensen for their opponents RB Leipzig in the first round of the cup is enormous – only the search for a stadium is proving difficult. The desired venue, Millerntor, will not be chosen, St. Pauli turned down a request from the regional league team.
The jubilation about qualifying for the first round of the cup after winning the Hamburg LOTTO Cup for the first time was followed by jubilation at Teutonia after the draw about their opponents RB Leipzig, whom the regional league team will meet on 31 August after a delay due to the Supercup duel between the Saxons and champions FC Bayern (30 July). “It’s a great draw,” several media quoted Teutonia’s sporting director Liborio Mazzagatti, who, in addition to the sporting highlight for the club, also has the financial aspect in mind and is hoping for a large crowd.
Artificial turf necessitates move to other venue
Because the home stadium Hoheluft (capacity for football matches: approx. 5000 fans) is only equipped with an artificial turf, which is not permitted in the cup, the regional league team has to look for a new venue. They had already chosen the Millerntor Stadium of FC St. Pauli, which they hoped would attract a five-figure crowd, but the second-division club turned down the Ottenser officials: “As is well known, FC St. Pauli is extremely critical of RB’s model, as we believe it is not compatible with the 50+1 regulation, which we are committed to. In our fan scene and supporters, too, RB’s model meets with strong rejection,” the “Hamburger Abendblatt” quoted the Kiez.
reasoning for the rejection.
The paper goes on to say: “FC St. Pauli therefore does not want to give RB a stage beyond possible compulsory matches, especially not at the Millerntor, which stands as a symbol for football based on solidarity and justice. “
Even the Volksparkstadion an option?
After the cancellation of St. Pauli, Teutonia is now considering other options for the duel against the current title holders. According to the “Frankfurter Rundschau”, the Volksparkstadion, Hamburger SV’s venue, and Eintracht Norderstedt’s Edmund Plambeck Stadium are under discussion.
Most recently, there had been discussions about RB Leipzig ahead of the 2022 Cup final, when SC Freiburg had refused to produce joint fan merchandise.
