Spurs coach Postecoglou rejects criticism of Werner transfer

Timo Werner is back in England – and not everyone is happy about it, with the new Tottenham Hotspur signing being criticized by fans in particular. Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou has now spoken about the German

Things have not gone well for Timo Werner in Leipzig recently, with just eight appearances and two goals in the Bundesliga for the German international striker (57 caps, 24 goals) in the current season. In the Champions League, he only made four substitute appearances – unsurprisingly, he was also sidelined by national coach Julian Nagelsmann. Werner was not even nominated for the test matches against Turkey (2:3) and in Austria (0:2).

However, the attacker wants to fulfill his dream of playing in the European Championship at home, for which he needs match practice – and he wants to get it in London. Tottenham have loaned out the 27-year-old until the end of the season. A transfer that many Spurs fans are not convinced of, partly due to Werner’s mixed record at Chelsea FC.

He spent two years at Stamford Bridge from 2020 to 2022, but fell short of expectations with 23 goals in 89 appearances. This and his unimpressive numbers at RB this season have led to the signing being viewed critically

Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou takes a very different view, with the Australian seeing the new signing as a major boost for Spurs. “I look at what he can give us today, not what happened three or four years ago,” the 58-year-old said on Friday. “I dare say he’s a different player, definitely a different person. “

In this context,

Postecoglou pointed out that people develop over the course of their lives – and this is also the case with Werner: “We all continue to develop. He has probably matured in a different phase of his life. He’s at a good age, has ambitions for the national team, wants to play at the highest level – this club offers him that chance.”

Werner could make his debut as early as Sunday against Manchester United
