Special honor for Munich

The tennis tournament in Munich is being upgraded: From the year after next, the clay court event will be part of the 500 series of the ATP Tour

Tennis pros can win more world ranking points at the traditional clay court tournament in Munich in future. The ATP players’ association is upgrading the BMW Open to a 500-category tournament from 2025; the event in the Bavarian capital was previously part of the 250 series.

In terms of dates, the tournament will remain in the same week in April and therefore counts as preparation for the French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, for the pros. The prize money amounts to 2.5 million euros

The Munich Tennis and Tournament Club (MTTC) Iphitos e.V., on whose grounds the tournament has been held with international status since 1949, had applied for the upgrade as part of a tender. After Halle and Hamburg, Munich will be the third tournament in Germany in the 500 series.

“I am delighted that Munich has been chosen as the location for an ATP 500 tournament. Munich is a city of sport and tennis in particular has a long tradition here. With the promotion to the renowned 500 ATP tennis tournaments, it will also be possible to get even more young people interested in tennis,” said Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) in a press release.
