Spartak Moscow vs PAOK Thessaloniki: Quincy Promes Looking to Make Amends for Missed Penalty

As it stands now, Spartak will have to chase a victory in order to ensure progress to the playoff round where the winner of the Benfica – Fenerbahce matchup awaits.

In game one, Spartak Moscow took an early 2-0 lead through Ivelin Popov and Quincy Promes, but PAOK turned the score around before half-time with goals from Aleksandar Prijovic (pen.), Dimitrios Limnios and Dimitrios Pelkas. In the second half, Promes missed a penalty in the 71st minute which would’ve tied the game and made the second leg in Moscow much more convenient for his side.

The match in Thessaloniki was marred by some controversy before the kick-off, as Russian journalists were involved in scuffles with PAOK fans at the entrance of Toumba Stadium. UEFA announced that it opened disciplinary proceedings against PAOK FC, but decided against initiating a probe on the alleged assaults. Spartak Moscow fans threatened with retaliation on social media and as a consequence, only around 50 Greek fans are expected to travel to Russia.

The five first leg goals were a surprise in a matchup of two rather indirect teams. With 14 total shots on goal between the two clubs over 90 minutes, the first half was more of an exception than a rule.

PAOK’s attacking quartet of Prijovic, Pelkas, Limnios and El Kaddouri proved to be very troublesome for Spartak Moscow’s sturdy defence and it’s up to manager Massimo Carrera to make the necessary adjustments ahead of tonight’s rematch set for 19:30 CET.

Quincy Promes will be the most talented player on the Otkritie Arena pitch. Spartak’s winger will be looking to make amends for his missed penalty kick. Luiz Adriano and Ze Luis are equally dangerous, so whoever Carrera decides to insert into the starting lineup will have an impact on the game.
