Quincy Promes (32) continues to make negative headlines: The Dutch attacking player, who had already been sentenced in the summer, was punished again. The reason for the Amsterdam court’s decision is immense
One misfortune rarely comes alone. This saying currently applies to Quincy Promes. However, the 32-year-old Dutchman cannot speak of misfortune in the truest sense of the word. Rather, the former international is himself to blame for his situation
The talk is of 1350 kilograms of cocaine
Promes, who had already been sentenced to 18 months in prison in mid-June for stabbing one of his cousins, has now been caught again – for involvement in drug trafficking. More specifically, the forward, who currently plays for Spartak Moscow in Russia, is alleged to have smuggled more than 1,350 kilograms of cocaine through the port of Antwerp together with accomplices.
The public prosecutor’s office had demanded nine years’ imprisonment, but it turned out to be six. This was the decision of an Amsterdam court – but it remains to be seen when and if Promes will serve his sentence.
No extradition treaty between the Netherlands and Russia
Because Promes was not present and has no plans to leave Moscow. There is also no extradition treaty between the Netherlands and Russia. Promes pleaded not guilty through his lawyers, who had previously argued that the former Ajax Amsterdam professional’s “employment obligations” took precedence over the criminal investigation.
The footballer and his co-defendant and uncle, who already has a criminal record, are said to belong to a network of drug dealers, many of whose members have since been arrested. In connection with the incident involving his cousin, Promes has so far only had to make one compensation payment to the injured party.
