As the England fans have been getting increasingly exciting about their team’s chances of success in Russia, the majority of the nation has enjoyed celebrating together over the last few weeks. Unfortunately, whilst it has united most of the nation, there are still some idiots around who think that a Sikh shopkeeper in East London should not be displaying a St George’s Cross flag.
Sagan Mangat who runs a heating and plumbing company displayed flags around his shop but received a hateful note to tell him that he ‘had the wrong flag up’. Rather than give into the narrow-minded bullies, he decided that he would retaliate in a much better way – by putting even more of the flags up. He has been displaying the flags for major tournaments for 30 years and has no intention of stopping doing so.
The nation is uniting over football
England plays Colombia this evening and fans will be gathering together across the country to support the team, sing songs and wave flags. If England win, they will have a fantastic chance of going on to the final, with so many of the big teams having been knocked out early on.
No person should be told whether they can show their support for the country they live in and this hateful note is totally against what the World Cup stands for. The World Cup is a tournament that symbolises the whole of the world coming together for the enjoyment of sport, not to argue about their heritage.
Football is certainly winning overall at this World Cup and long may your flags be flown Sagan Mangat!
