With just over a week to go before Wimbledon, Andy Murray’s back problems have required surgery. The management of the former world number one tennis player confirmed the operation without giving details, as reported by the AP news agency.
On Wednesday, the 37-year-old Scot Murray retired after just a few games against Australian Jordan Thompson in his second round match at the grass court tournament at the Queen’s Club in London. A day earlier, Murray had played his 1000th singles match on the ATP Tour and celebrated his 739th victory.
Murray has been plagued by a whole series of injuries for a long time. The Briton, who has been playing with an artificial hip for years, has announced that he will most likely end his career this year. However, the two-time singles gold medal winner still wants to compete at the Olympics in Paris. He won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016. The Grand Slam tournament begins on July 1.
