Shooting guard Thomas extends contract with Alba

Matt Thomas will continue to play for Alba Berlin in the coming season. The 30-year-old shooting guard has extended his expiring contract with the runners-up by a further year

Matt Thomas was already one of the best players in the US state of Wisconsin in his high school days. After graduating from high school, he decided to attend Iowa State University, where he continued to develop over four years and demonstrated his skills as a distance thrower.

Eurocup victory against Alba

The 1.91-metre guard signed his first professional contract with Spanish ACB team Monbus Obradoiro in the summer of 2017. After an outstanding season there, he moved within the league to top club Basket Club Valencia for the 2018/19 season, where he promptly became Eurocup champion – he played a key role in this success in the best-of-three final against Alba

Intermezzo in the NBA and return to Europe

In July 2019, Thomas took the plunge into the NBA and played 121 games for the Toronto Raptors, Utah Jazz and Chicago Bulls. He returned to Europe in early 2023 and played eleven games for Panathinaikos Athens before joining Alba Berlin in the summer of 2023. With his extensive experience, Thomas not only impressed at Alba with his outstanding shooting, but also became an important leader in the second half of the season. In the playoffs, he was an indispensable part of Alba’s offense with over 14 points per game.

“An exceptional player “

Alba sports director Himar Ojeda was delighted that Thomas has now extended his contract in the capital until 2025: “We are very happy that we were able to keep Matt for another year. He’s a true professional and it took him some time to get used to our style of play at the beginning, but he showed what an exceptional player he is in the second half of last season at the latest. Matt will continue to play a central role in our team next season. “

Finally continuity for Thomas

Matt Thomas himself is also happy to be staying in Berlin: “I’m very happy to be back at Alba. It’s the first time in my career that I’ve stayed with the same club and in the same city for a second season. This continuity and stability were important factors in my decision. I’m looking forward to building on last season’s successes and continuing to work on both improving myself and achieving better results as a team. I can’t wait to get back on the pitch with my teammates and get to know my new teammates!”
