Shone at the 2021 AMG test: Will Morris Schuring also surprise in the DTM in 2025?

How Manthey’s new DTM youngster Morris Schuring attracted attention as a 16-year-old, how he made his breakthrough and how well prepared he is for the DTM

Exciting newcomer at Manthey in the DTM: Morris Schuring, a 19-year-old Dutchman, will drive a third Porsche 911 GT3 R in the long-standing series in 2025 under the entry of the Manthey junior team. After his Le Mans triumph with the Porsche squad in the LMGT3 class and second place in the WEC overall standings, he is now taking the next step in his career.

“Even as a child, I followed the DTM, a super cool series that is known worldwide. It’s great that I can now race there,” said the youngster after the announcement. ”It’s a dream come true and I’m really proud to be doing it with Manthey.”

The team proved that it is one of the best by winning the title with Thomas Preining in 2023. “Last year we won Le Mans together, and I’m very happy that we are now working together in a sprint series,” said Schuring.

Eye-catching Mercedes-AMG test at 16 years old

What not many people know: the man from the province of Utrecht has already surprised at the Young Driver Test of the DTM teams of Mercedes-AMG in Le Castellet on November 10th and 11th, 2021, which also served as a selection for drivers with DTM potential.

Drivers like David Schumacher and David Beckmann were getting their first taste of GT3 racing, but Schuring stood out with his strong pace. He had just completed his first season in the Porsche Supercup and the Carrera Cup Germany.

Nevertheless, the then 16-year-old decided to stay in the Porsche family and continue gaining experience in the one-make cups. This could now also pay off in the DTM. “I love sprint races, and in the DTM I have the chance to really prove myself as a driver,” says Schuring, who, thanks to his years in the Porsche Carrera Cup, is no stranger to optimizing his car to his own needs.

Schuring already knows seven of the eight DTM tracks

And he has developed another advantage. “Thanks to my time in the Porsche Carrera Cup, I know seven of the DTM tracks,” he points out, referring to the fact that the one-make cup is held as part of the DTM supporting program. “Only the Norisring will be new to me.”

His biggest success in the early years of the Porsche was a fourth place in the overall standings of the Porsche Supercup with Alex Fach’s team in 2023. Among other victories, he won his home race at Zandvoort. His win at the Sachsenring also made him the youngest Carrera Cup Germany winner in history.

The fact that he is now competing in the DTM also has to do with the fact that he was upgraded from silver to gold in the FIA driver classification. This means that there is no longer any room for him alongside a works driver in the LMGT3 class, because the second and third drivers must have silver and bronze status.

“The bar is set very high”

How does he rate the challenge of DTM? “The level in DTM is incredibly high,” he says. “The drivers who race here are truly among the best in the world. Several brands are represented with works drivers, so the bar is set very high.” But Schuring wants to grow with the task and make the step up to being a professional race driver.

He has the team’s backing. “Morris had a very successful WEC season with us in 2024,” says managing director and team principal Nicolas Raeder. ‘He is a young driver who has impressed us with his performance, so the next logical step is the DTM. I’m pleased that he is now strengthening our team in the sprint series and can prove his skills there as a young driver.’
