Paris remains a difficult place for Naomi Osaka: The four-time Grand Slam winner from Japan failed in the first round of the French Open. Osaka (24), who caused a big stir last year when she withdrew after the first round, lost to US player Amanda Anisimova 5:7, 4:6 on Monday.
Anisimova had already knocked Osaka out in the third round of the Australian Open in January – now she caused another big disappointment for the world number 38, who has never made it past the third round in Paris.
Before the start of the tournament, the former world number one had reported that she was still moved by the events of the previous year. “I’m not going to lie. Before I came back, I was worried,” Osaka said.
She had not wanted to attend the mandatory press conferences in 2021 and eventually did not show up for her second-round match after public discussions. Osaka publicly addressed her mental issues in the move and took a break from playing until the Tokyo Olympics.
