FC Basel made it through to the last 16 of the Swiss Cup in a special way. The stoppage time in extra time against second division side Stade Nyonnais was memorable
Everything was in place for the final showdown: 120 minutes had passed between second-division side Stade Nyonnais and favorites FC Basel, but that’s when things were about to get really interesting: Basel, short-handed since the 116th minute (yellow-red against Avdullahu), were awarded a penalty.
The fouled returnee Shaqiri (only back at the club for a month and this time substituted in the 78th minute) with the captain’s armband on his arm converted it for the supposed victory (120.+3).
“Dangge Marwin”, tweeted the FCB
However, stoppage time in extra time had one more twist in store: Stuttgart loanee Cissé actually conceded another penalty at the other end before the whistle was blown. Then came the moment for the third former Bundesliga player: ex-BVB and FCA keeper Hitz saved the shot from Nyon attacker Koré – and saved the first division team from a penalty shoot-out. So it remained 1:0.
“Dangge Marwin,” tweeted FCB after the final whistle in front of 3,100 spectators at the Stade de Colovray in the city that is home to UEFA. During normal time, the underdogs from Nyon had to or were allowed to thank their keeper Mastil, for example against the ex-Hertha player Kade (50th). His team-mate Kololli headed the ball over the empty goal again (60′) – so that extra time had to be played
The draw for the round of 16 took place immediately afterwards: Basel will face league rivals FC Sion at home.
