“Shameless”: Wave of criticism against EA SPORTS for new pack section

Following the “Journey in Football Ultimate Team”, EA SPORTS FC 24 now has packs specially tailored to the players. But why these are anything but well received by the community

Whether “Deluxe 86+ Pack” or “Future Stars Supergiant Pack”: In FUT by EA SPORTS FC 24, there are now countless variants of the much-criticized loot boxes. The temptation and incentive to obtain valuable items is great, but can also be costly.

But as if the promo packs in addition to the classic gold, silver and bronze versions were not enough, EA SPORTS is creating a new category: “Packs for you”. As the publisher explains on the “EA SPORTS FC Direct Communication” X-channel, these are loot boxes specially selected for the user. These are selected according to certain factors such as FUT playing time.

In other words, this measure is actually intended to reward users who spend a lot of time in the mode. A commendable move in and of itself, but one that the publisher itself is undoing – and taking a lot of criticism for it. Contrary to the actual purpose, the packs cost in-game coins, some alternatively FC Points, which in turn can only be purchased with real money.

“We have to play more to give you more money? “

Players vented their anger under the announcement post on the “EA SPORTS FC Direct Communication” X-channel. “Shameless” is the commercialization; “Loyalty packs must be free”, is the clear demand. Others found themselves in gallows humor: “That means we have to play more to give you more money?”

In fact, the price tag in front of the “rewards” is surprising from this perspective. After all, there have been such rewards in the form of gift packs in the past. For example, in FIFA 21, as one user reminded us under the X-Post.

From a business perspective, however, things look different. This is because the company’s latest quarterly report shows that although it is struggling with a drop in game sales, it is making a profit at the same time. 73 percent of EA’s total net revenue between October 1 and December 31, 2023 came from live services – i.e. FUT, EA Play & Co.
