The Scuderia remains true to itself when it comes to naming – The new Formula One car, record champion Lewis Hamilton’s first Ferrari, has been given the official name SF-25
Now Lewis Hamilton’s first Formula 1 Ferrari also officially has a name. The car, previously known as “Project 677”, is called SF-25. This was announced by the Scuderia on Thursday.
At first glance, the naming seems logical, because the two predecessors were named SF-23 and SF-24, based on the respective year. However, a look further back shows that Ferrari has always been good for a surprise in this regard.
In fact, no other team has been as creative as the Scuderia when naming their cars in the past. The first car in the hybrid era in 2014 was still called the F14 T, with the “F” standing for Ferrari, the “14” for the year and the “T” for turbo.
In 2015, the SF15-T was a slight departure, with the “SF” designation standing for Scuderia Ferrari ever since. In 2016, the SF16-H followed and with it the next small change. The “T” for turbo was now replaced by “H” for hybrid.

In 2017, the name was changed completely with the SF70H, where the “70” then stood for the 70th anniversary of Ferrari as an automobile manufacturer. The SF71H a year later was followed in 2019 by the SF90, the next completely different name.
This time, the change was made to mark the 90th anniversary of the Scuderia, which was founded in 1929. The hybrid suffix in the naming was dropped in this context and has not been returned since.
In 2020, the SF1000 followed, this time in reference to Ferrari’s 1,000th Formula 1 race. In 2021, the SF21 marked a return to a more classic naming convention, but the F1-75 in 2022 was already the next “outlier”.
The background this time was the 75th anniversary of Ferrari as a car manufacturer, whereby, surprisingly, the “SF” was dropped from the name for the first time since 2014, with “F1” instead making a clear reference to Formula 1.
In 2023, the Scuderia returned to the more traditional naming convention with the SF-23, which was retained in 2024 and now also in 2025. The SF-25 will be presented on February 19, with Ferrari showing the new livery for 2025 the day before.
