Sergio Perez has shrugged off the Barcelona stable order and insists he is allowed to win against Max Verstappen: “Otherwise I wouldn’t be here “
This happened after the race in Spain: “Yes, we spoke”, confirms Perez and explains why he thought the situation was unfair at the time, but no longer: “In the race you only have certain information. The team, on the other hand, has the bigger picture,” he says.
He had the feeling at the time that his planned two-stop strategy would work out and wanted to try everything for it. “But it was clear that three stops would be the right thing to do,” Perez says. “But we spoke after the race and it’s all sorted. “
“But we agree that we could have done a better job in the stint to give both strategies a chance to see which one works,” Perez said, but again spoke of a “great team result” and “great momentum for Red Bull”, stressing the “great atmosphere” in the team.
And he underlines, “They’ve made it clear that I have the full support of the team to see me win.”
However, many have doubts about that. Perez is seen by many as the clear number 2 who can only win if Max Verstappen has no chance of winning. Therefore, it was also clear to many that he was unlikely to stop his team-mate in Barcelona.
But Perez himself insists that he is free to drive and win races and also race for the title: “They didn’t have to tell me that. On my side of the garage and within the team, it’s clear,” says the Mexican. “Otherwise I wouldn’t be here. “
