Moto2 World Championship leader Sergio Garcia will not get a chance in MotoGP for the time being: Did the doors to the premier class close because of his background?
It has been clear since the last race weekend that Sergio Garcia will not be moving up to MotoGP next year. The MTHelmets-MSi team confirmed at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg that Sergio Garcia and Ivan Ortola will form the Moto2 team next year. Garcia had previously been linked to Pramac-Yamaha and Trackhouse-Aprilia
However, the doors at both MotoGP teams closed. Trackhouse decided to sign Ai Ogura (see story), who is Sergio Garcia’s teammate this year. At Pramac, all indications are that Jack Miller will ride alongside Miguel Oliveira.
Garcia is disappointed that he will not get a chance in the premier class in 2025. “It’s not what I wanted,” Garcia told DAZN. “But I’m also happy that everything is clear now. I will continue to ride in this category next year. I’m partly happy about that because it gives me the chance to fight for two world titles. “
The Spanish passport is not an advantage for Garcia. MotoGP rights holder Dorna is aware that there are currently too many Spaniards and Italians racing in the premier class. Ten Spaniards and six Italians are competing in the current season. This means that there are only six riders who are not from Spain or Italy
Jack Miller is one of these riders. According to insiders, the MotoGP managers have made a strong case for the Australian. Sergio Garcia is aware that he is at a disadvantage as a Spaniard. According to Garcia, promotion to MotoGP was not possible “due to external factors”.
“I am calm because I know that I have done my job,” remarks the Moto2 World Championship leader. “I’m leading the championship. That is the prerequisite to make it into MotoGP. But unfortunately it didn’t happen due to things beyond my control. But I’m still happy. It will work out at some point.”
With Fermin Aldeguer, Ai Ogura and possibly also Somkiat Chantra (what the Honda riders think of the rookie), there will probably be three newcomers from Moto2 next year. Sergio Garcia has had a good handle on these three riders so far. As many two-year contracts were signed this year, there won’t be many vacancies for MotoGP 2026 either
