She may have gone into the tournament as 17th seed but Serena Williams and the US Open were made for each other. It is the coveted tournament that she used as inspiration for her dedicated training from an early age, as recently revealed in her Nike ad.
8th seed Pliskova would have been hoping that she could repeat her 2016 US Open SF victory over Williams but it was not to be. Williams looks like she really means business, despite still being some way off her top form.
US Open 2018 Odds
Serena Williams now got through to the semi-finals of the US Open for the ninth consecutive time (she didn’t enter last year due to having her baby). This year she has the added motivation that she could win her 24th major title, which will equal the all-time record currently held by Margaret Court. It would also be her first Grand Slam trophy since she gave birth to daughter Olympia a year ago.
Williams wins 6-4, 6-3 at US Open Semis
Williams did not start off well and she looked in trouble as she went 4-2 down in the first set. She fought back to take the set 6-4, with a lot of help from the cheering crowds at the Arthur Ashe stadium. She cranked up the pace to win eight games in a row – the last four of Set 1 and the first four of Set 2, to power her way into the semi-finals.
Williams making history
Serena Williams will now play Anastasija Sevastova in the semi-finals, as she looks to break yet another record. One thing for sure is when she does hang up her racquet, it will be a very long time before anyone can catch her Open Era Grand Slam titles and match wins records, if ever at all.
