After an early end to her comeback at Wimbledon, tennis superstar Serena Williams is planning to make her next appearance. The 40-year-old American is on the entry list for the WTA tournament in Toronto, organisers have announced.
The hard-court event, the highest category after the four Grand Slam tournaments, will be held from 8 to 14 August. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, was defeated in the opening round by France’s Harmony Tan at Wimbledon in her first singles appearance after a year-long injury layoff. Afterwards, she left it open whether she wanted to continue her career. But Williams had also expressed motivation for the US Open, which starts on 29 August.
“When you’re at home, especially in New York and at the US Open, which is where I won my first Grand Slam, it’s always super special,” she said just over a fortnight ago. “It’s definitely a lot of motivation to get better and play at home. “
