The FC Bayern management looked with concern to Inglewood in California, where Alphonso Davies had to be substituted early in the match against the USA (2:1). He does not appear to be facing a longer break.
In the meantime, Alphonso Davies has returned to Munich and will be thoroughly examined. At FC Bayern, however, it is assumed that the 24-year-old is not worse off. He was substituted in the 12th minute and watched the rest of the game with an ice pack on his knee.
A precaution? Assistant coach Mauro Biello gave a similar account shortly after the game: “I think it was a knock. Alphonso felt something and didn’t want to risk anything at that point. He was still feeling the effects of the other game against Mexico, so he decided it would be best to come off.”
It is not yet clear whether Davies will be back in action as early as Saturday’s Bundesliga match against FC St. Pauli. Possible alternatives would be Hiroki Ito, who is still traveling with Japan and will not return to Munich until Thursday, and Raphael Guerreiro, who was not called up for Portugal and is rested. However, the 31-year-old has recently shown better performances in the center.
Urbig in goal for at least two games
Min-Jae Kim, who has been plagued by Achilles tendon problems for quite some time and was therefore unable to play for South Korea in the international matches, is fit again a little faster than originally thought. Kim joined Bayern Munich’s training session on Monday and should therefore be ready for the decisive weeks of the season.
The same applies to Jonas Urbig, who left the German U21 team early due to a foot injury. This news is important for FC Bayern because Manuel Neuer will be out for at least the next two Bundesliga games, meaning Urbig will be needed as a deputy and will continue to gain match practice. He has moved past Sven Ulreich and Daniel Peretz in the internal goalkeeper hierarchy.
There are currently no other absences to report, except for Aleksandar Pavlovic (glandular fever), and almost all national players have enough time to recover until Saturday. Even Harry Kane, who played through England’s 3-0 win over Latvia in the World Cup qualifier on Monday evening and scored again.
