New tires and Rally1 cars without hybrid drive will pose a special challenge at the 2025 Monte-Carlo Rally, according to Sebastien Ogier
Eight-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier expects the 2025 Monte Carlo Rally (January 23-26) to be a particularly demanding season opener in the World Rally Championship (WRC), as new tires and the elimination of hybrid powertrains make preparation more difficult.
“Every year I say that Monte Carlo will never be easy, no matter how often you start here. I always have great respect for this event because you know that unexpected conditions await you,” explains Ogier. “With the changes to the tires and the car, we are probably less prepared this year than ever before. But I think that applies to almost everyone. Those who adapt best have a good chance.”
Last week, the Frenchman completed a test day with the Toyota GR Yaris to prepare for the season opener. It was only his second outing in a non-hybrid Rally1 car, after the FIA decided to dispense with hybrid technology for the years 2025 and 2026.
This test, which Ogier described as one of the most important of his career, was also his first experience with the new Hankook tires. The South Korean manufacturer is replacing Pirelli as the single tire supplier for the WRC this season. Especially at the Rally Monte-Carlo, with its sometimes very changeable track conditions, the right choice of tires could play a crucial role.
This could play into the hands of an experienced Monte Carlo expert like Ogier. The Frenchman could win the rally, which is held in his home region, for the tenth time this year.
“Ultimately, it’s a difficult rally where driver and experience can often make the difference,” adds Ogier. ‘I hope we can be competitive. I’ve always trusted my gut feeling. I’m there to do my best. Hopefully, my connection to this rally will help me feel comfortable.’
