Sebastian Vettel outed himself as a fan of the new government, but is disappointed that the speed limit will not be introduced: But he is convinced it will come eventually
To be a Formula 1 driver and still vote Green and be in favour of the introduction of a speed limit, that certainly goes together for Sebastian Vettel. The German, who is intensively involved in many environmental issues outside the car, had already announced his intention to vote for the Greens before the Bundestag election.
As the third strongest party, the Green Party has also made it into the government and has secured a number of ministerial posts in the new Bundestag – although the Ministry of Transport is not one of them. That is led by FDP man Volker Wissing and yet does not provide for the introduction of a speed limit on motorways, which the Greens would have liked to see.
“Of course I am disappointed about that! The speed limit would have been an ‘easy win’,” says Vettel in an interview with the ‘Süddeutsche Zeitung’. However, the Aston Martin driver is convinced that the speed limit is only a matter of time: “It will come one way or another, I think. “
For the four-time world champion in the new government, however, it is much more important that the big picture in Germany moves forward – and he certainly sees that happening. With the early coal phase-out, for example, a good point has already been made, says Vettel, who is a fan of the new government, even if the traffic light coalition will have to try to reconcile many interests.
“I am a fan of change. I’m like a lot of people: I don’t want to wait any longer, we can’t afford it,” he stresses. That’s why he prefers to try to see the positive, “rather than say: it’s all just rubbish.”
“Something really has to be set in motion now, care has to be taken and people have to talk to each other and look for solutions. The fact that the parties have not come to an agreement here and there is acceptable,” emphasises the Aston Martin driver.
“You can only be disappointed when you realise after two or three years that nothing has changed. “
