What was already in the pipeline in mid-November is now official: Sandro Schwarz will take over as coach of the New York Red Bulls. Emil Forsberg, a prominent new signing, is likely to follow soon
This is Sandro Schwarz’s second stint abroad. The 45-year-old got off to a flying start as a coach at FSV Mainz 05 (2017 to 2019 in the Bundesliga), followed by spells at Dynamo Moscow (October 14, 2020 to June 30, 2022) and Hertha BSC (July 1, 2022 to April 16, 2023). Since then, Schwarz has been looking for a club.
As of Thursday, he has a new employer: the New York Red Bulls officially announced that Schwarz will take up the job in the USA on January 1 once his visa has been confirmed. “We are delighted to welcome Sandro to the club,” said sporting director Jochen Schneider, who previously worked at VfB Stuttgart, RB Leipzig and FC Schalke: “Sandro is a great leader who fits our culture, and his experience as a head coach in Europe matches what we are trying to achieve. We are excited to bring him here and work towards success in 2024. “
The New York Red Bulls finished the 2023 MLS season in eighth place with 43 points; after a successful wild card round against Charlotte FC (5:2), they were eliminated in the first play-off round against FC Cincinnati – dramatically in a penalty shoot-out.
Schwarz promises “heart, mind and passion “
“I’m looking forward to joining the club and getting started soon,” Schwarz explains in an initial statement: “I’m very motivated to achieve many great things with this club and I’m looking forward to the coming season.” He sees one point as central to his work. “We want everyone to feel from the outset that my staff and I will work for this club with heart, mind and passion.”
According to the club, Schwarz will be moving to New York with his wife and two children. He will probably soon receive sporting support from Emil Forsberg. It is expected that the Swede will end his career in the Big Apple after nine years with Leipzig. The announcement seems only a matter of time
