With four wins from four games, VfL Wolfsburg had a dream start to the season. In the meantime, however, the Lower Saxons are clearly struggling with problems. Boss Jörg Schmadtke recognises this as well.
Three games, three defeats, 2:8 goals. VfL Wolfsburg are on a downward trend after a perfect start to the season, now without a win in six competitive games. The latest disappointment in the league, after previously losing 3-1 to Hoffenheim and Gladbach respectively, was Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Union Berlin. For VfL boss Jörg Schmadtke, it was a used day in the capital. “I didn’t like that,” says the managing director.
Specifically, the 57-year-old explains, “I don’t like that one or two elements cause us to lose games.” While Dodi Lukebakio missed the lead on Wolfsburg’s side when he hit the post, Union took the lead with their first chance on goal. “The fact is,” Schmadtke said, “that we don’t have enough stability at the moment, neither in one direction nor the other. The performances are not up to our standards.” His demand: “We have to draw the right conclusions from this. “
On Wednesday in Salzburg
However, the manager does not want to reproach newcomer Lukebakio for the missed shot against the post. “That can happen,” explained Schmadtke, who was, however, very displeased with the Belgian’s refusal to work before the 0:2. “That is out of the question, something like that is not acceptable.” Many things have to improve at VfL, and the next opportunity will come quickly. On Wednesday, coach Mark van Bommel’s team plays host to RB Salzburg in the Champions League.
