The association Athletes Germany demands clarity from the German Boxing Federation (DBV) regarding Sarah Scheurich.
“Without valid justification, the DBV is denying a successful boxer the opportunity to show her skills and return to the national squad,” Johannes Herber, executive director of Athletes Germany, is quoted as saying in a statement published on Friday. The federation, however, denied this.
According to Athletes Germany, “various incidents and statements by the federation” indicated “that Sarah Scheurich’s multiple public criticisms of the DBV played a significant role in the nomination decision”. DBV sports director Michael Müller, however, told the SID that the decision had been made “completely objectively and without emotion” “based on performances that were not given. She did not fulfil a single criterion.”
Müller admitted, however, that “the relationship of trust between the athlete and the federation has been shattered”. “She is permanently telling the untruth in public, that is not acceptable. “
Meanwhile,
Herber demanded in the statement that the DBV “end its stalling tactics and show Sarah Scheurich a possible way to continue her career”. The boxer deserved the chance to “prove her suitability for the national squad”.
