David Schumacher, Maximilian Götz and Patrick Assenheimer will start together with Carrie Schreiner in the 2022 GTC Race Series
David Schumacher will not only be getting a taste of GT3 air in the DTM this year: the Schaeffler-Paravan brand ambassador will also be competing in the GTC Race Series in 2022, where he will alternate with DTM Champion Maximilian Götz and Mercedes-AMG Junior Patrick Assenheimer as team partners for regular driver Carrie Schreiner. The 23-year-old from the Saarland will contest all five race weekends in the Mercedes-AMG GT3 equipped with the space drive system.
The additional entries will also give Schumacher the chance to gain experience with the electronic steering system, as this year in the DTM only Maximilian Buhk’s Mücke-Mercedes has the system on board without a steering column, while the rookie’s Winward Mercedes is equipped with conventional steering.
The car that Schumacher and Götz will start with is the Mercedes-AMG GT3 that was also driven by the Mücke team at the test drives in Imola at the beginning of March. It will be entered by Schaeffler-Paravan itself, as in previous years, under the name Space Drive Racing.
Götz, who is now also a Schaeffler-Paravan brand ambassador, has been nominated for the second race weekend at the Lausitzring, while Assenheimer is scheduled to start at Assen. Schumacher is fired up to finally get going. “It’s my first season in GT3. In the GTC Race Series, I’ll be racing with the space drive system for the first time,” says the son of former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher.
The Schaeffler-Paravan development team would like to further develop the steer-by-wire technology in the future so that it is ready for series production and advances autonomous driving. Schreiner, who is a regular driver, will take the lead in putting the system through its paces in the GTC Race Series. The 23-year-old has already been driving with the Space Drive system since 2020, but has so far only gained experience in the Audi R8 LMS GT3.
“If something can withstand the extreme conditions of racing, the challenges of road traffic are no longer a problem. For me, it’s a great challenge to assist in this,” says the racer, who also clearly defines her goals in the championship: “I’m curious to see how the steering feel has developed since my last outing and I want to score as many podium finishes as possible. So far I’ve only heard positive things about the Mercedes-AMG GT3 in conjunction with Space-Drive. “
