There was a scandal at the European Basketball Championship in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Sunday evening – possibly with serious consequences.
According to several media reports, there was a fistfight in the dressing room after the 88:83 victory of hosts Georgia over Turkey. Turkish professional Furkan Korkmaz allegedly got into a fight with three Georgians, according to the Turkish assistant coach.
Turkey’s vice-president Omer Onan threatened late Sunday night, according to basketball portal “Eurohoops”: “If we don’t get the security camera footage, we will leave this tournament.” For Turkey, the narrow defeat after two overtimes was their first in the tournament. There had already been arguments between players of both teams in a heated atmosphere on the pitch.
The Turks are a possible round of 16 opponent for the German team, who qualified for the round of 16 in Berlin on Sunday.
