Salah Speaks Out About Fans’ Mane Backlash for ‘Being Selfish’

Liverpool has won five games from five in their best start to the Premier League ever. On Saturday they played Tottenham Hotspur – a fixture that Spurs comfortably won 4-1 in the previous season. This time it was a very different game, with Liverpool running out 2-1 winners in a match that could have seen them go four or five goals up, had they been more clinical with their chances.

Liverpool trio scored 57 goals last season

One of the main talking points after the game was how the final pass from Liverpool was either poor or players looked reluctant to play each other in. This is a far cry from the way that they had played last season, where the front three of Firmino, Salah and Mane had accumulated 57 goals between them in the league. They had also weighed in with large numbers of league assists – Salah had 11, Firmino 7 and Mane also assisting 7 goals. They played like a team with one joint mission – to win the Champions League.

‘Selfish’ play on Saturday prevented more goals being scored

There were chances on Saturday where it looked like Salah and Mane chose to take a shot themselves when their fellow strikers were in better positions or failed to pick out the right pass. One particular situation involved Mane holding the ball up before releasing to Keita when the ball through to Salah had looked the best option. This lead to a number of Liverpool fans taking to social media to vent their frustration at Mane. Mane apparently took a post off social media because fans had called him selfish for the incident in the game. If Keita had scored (and he probably should have) it would no doubt have been a different story.

Salah denies any selfishness in Liverpool’s attack

Now Mo Salah has responded to the debate over whether any of the front three are selfish. He said: “There is a real solidarity between us because we do not care who will score the most or who scores first. Everyone works to make sure the other succeed. And as you can see, we all score.”
