Sad departure of a record-breaking star

After ending his career in the UFC, Donald Cerrone surprisingly wants to take a completely different path. Plus, the “Cowboy” reveals why this was his last fight

In the beginning of 2020 he was Conor McGregor’s comeback opponent, until Saturday he was the UFC fighter with the most wins and despite various controversies one of the most popular stars of the MMA league – now “Cowboy” Donald Cerrone is calling it quits!

Cerrone lost at UFC 276 on Sunday night by forfeit to Jim Miller, with whom he had previously shared first place in the ranking of most UFC wins (23 each), it was the 39-year-old welterweight’s sixth loss in his past seven fights.

Donald Cerrone: retirement of an unfinished man

After the fight, Cerrone stripped off his gloves in the Octagon – the usual sign of retirement, which he then confirmed to star interviewer Joe Rogan with depressing words: “I just don’t love it anymore,” Cerrone revealed, the motivation to train for the fights having noticeably waned with increasing age. Prior to the fight, he had spoken of plans to fight two more fights.

The man with the characteristic cowboy hat now wants to devote himself to acting: “I want to be a movie star now, baby. So it’s time to say goodbye,” said the ex-kickboxer from Denver, who has had a few small movie and series roles in recent years.

The veteran fighter was part of the UFC in 2011 when his former league WEC merged – a total of 48 fights in both leagues is a record – but the unusually long-lived career remained unfinished: He lost all four of his title fights, most recently in 2015 to then-UFC lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos.

With the words “Thank you, UFC” Cerrone now stepped down,
