Russia’s World Cup exclusion is final

The World Cup exclusion of the Russian national team for the war of aggression against Ukraine is final. This was announced by the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday.

Accordingly, the Russian federation has withdrawn its appeal against the decision of FIFA’s world governing body. The proceedings will be discontinued shortly, the CAS notice added.

In a first step, CAS had rejected the Russians’ request to suspend the FIFA decision for the time being. The play-offs for the last European tickets for the final tournament in Qatar therefore took place without the Russian team. Their opponents Poland were automatically qualified for the play-off final and beat Sweden 2-0.

Objection to exclusion of Russian clubs remains formal

The appeal against the exclusion of the Russian clubs from the European Cup, however, was upheld by the Russian association, although CAS had also rejected the urgent appeal against UEFA’s sanctions in this case.

The judge’s decision is not yet final. However, this fundamental decision is not expected for several weeks.
