The Russian tennis player Darja Kassatkina has publicly admitted her homosexuality. In an interview with YouTuber Vitiya Kravchenko on Monday, the 25-year-old explained that she currently has a girlfriend.
In addition, Kassatkina posted a photo with her girlfriend on Instagram in the evening. In Russia, same-sex partnerships are not recognised.
Thus, Kassatkina also criticised in the video interview that there are several “forbidden topics” in her home country, adding: “For young people who face problems in public, it’s very important when athletes or other famous people talk about it.” The tennis player is dating a female athlete, according to the photo on Instagram. Natalya Alexandrovna Zabiyakois a Russian figure skater and shares several photos with Kassatkina on her profile.
Kassatkina is currently ranked twelfth in the world and is the best Russian player. Kassatkina was seeded second at the Rothenbaum in Hamburg, but surprisingly lost to Czech Katerina Siniakova in three sets. Kassatkina has been playing in the pros since 2014 and has won four WTA tournaments on the tour so far.
