It’s been common in American football for a long time, FC Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann could also imagine it in football: An audio connection between the coach and the players during games. Marco Rose, on the other hand, is sceptical. It would have made him “crazy” as a player, says the BVB coach.
Rose would not describe himself as a technophile. Rather the exact opposite. However, this does not fundamentally prevent the BVB coach from taking a closer look at innovations that could support his coaching work.
He would therefore definitely look at Julian Nagelsmann’s idea of equipping the players with an audio connection to the coach, as in American football, thanks to which communication can take place in both directions during the game. “But for me, I have the impression that it doesn’t need my voice on the player’s jersey as well,” the 45-year-old said on Thursday when asked by WDR.

Rose justified his stance by saying that “the boys have to make their own decisions” and that as coaches they should be given some freedom on the pitch. “I don’t think much of making robots out of the players who react as if pressing a button,” said the BVB coach. As a player, it would have made him “crazy” if he had had the coach permanently in his ear. “I would probably tell him today to shut up.”
He also doesn’t know if it would “benefit the productivity of the players” if they heard everything a coach said during a match. “Some of it,” he said, “is just to relieve stress. “
