As he also has a past in the Red Bull football empire, the now 54-year-old was coach at former Leipzig affiliate RB Salzburg from 2012 to 2014.
Schmidt is currently the coach of the prestigious Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, where he is tied up until the end of the season. However, it is questionable whether he would and could get out of his contract early.
Mintzlaff: New head coach for the second half of the season
Co-coach Achim Beierlorzer is expected to take charge of Leipzig’s team in Tuesday’s Champions League match against Manchester City, if the 54-year-old can “take time off” in time following a Corona infection. It is possible that Beierlorzer will continue to lead the RB team until the end of the first half of the season on 19 December, “and then we assume that we will be able to present the new head coach of RB Leipzig for the second half of the season,” Mintzlaff stressed on Sunday in Sport1-Doppelpass.
