Riots before Frankfurt’s Europa League match in Antwerp

Supporters of Eintracht Frankfurt apparently went on the rampage before the Europa League match at Royal Antwerp on Thursday.

According to concurring Belgian media reports, Hesse fans attacked a bar near the stadium in Antwerp in the afternoon and fought with the police. The police were on the alert throughout the day and were present with a large contingent. Several people were arrested.

According to reports, the terrace of the bar was destroyed and pyrotechnics and objects were thrown at the police. The police also used pepper spray. Up to 300 supporters were reportedly involved in the riots.

According to VRT, SGE supporters had already rioted the day before in the northern Belgian port city. The police arrested dozens of them and they were to remain in custody until the end of the match.
