Ring marathon ends with a bang

WWE rival AEW gives its fans an almost hour-long wrestling spectacle on free TV. A big rematch at London’s Wembley Stadium is likely to follow

With just a few weeks to go before its biggest show of the year at London’s Wembley Stadium, WWE rival AEW has put down a big exclamation marker.

At the 250th edition of the Dynamite show, the league treated its fans to an outstanding marathon match on free TV – ending with a title quake after 58 minutes.

AEW Dynamite: MJF takes advantage of Ospreay’s scruples

Former World Champion MJF challenged Will Ospreay, the promotion’s British shooting star, for his International Title on Wednesday.

A spectacular exchange developed between the two, with Ospreay underlining his reputation as currently the best ring performer in the world for many – and MJF that he is often underestimated in this regard.

The duel came to a dramatic finale just before the 60-minute time limit expired – with the key moment being Ospreay’s reluctance to use his hardest weapon against MJF: the Tiger Driver 91, which had played a central role in his big matches with Kenny Omega and Bryan Danielson.

Ospreay showed remorse against MJF because, according to the script, the move – in which his opponent landed almost unchecked on his head – had inflicted a dangerous injury on Danielson. MJF ultimately took advantage of Ospreay’s scruples through his own ruthlessness: he defeated Ospreay with an unauthorized use of his “Dynamite Diamond Ring” – and with his last ounce of strength. MJF stayed on top of Ospreay for a long time and was even given oxygen afterwards to emphasize the particular toughness of the match

Return match at All In at Wembley looms

“An outstanding, great state of the art match without the slow segments that often plague hour-long matches,” said the Pro Wrestling Torch, praising the clash: “I don’t know if there were any people left who doubted how good MJF is, but this has silenced the last doubters. Ospreay has underlined his stature once again. A great statement match for AEW at the 250th Dynamite.”

The messy title win for MJF – who recently turned villain again with a brutal attack on Daniel Garcia – looks to be a prelude to a big rematch at Ospreay’s home show in London.

Already set for All In on August 25 are title matches between World Champion Swerve Strickland and Bryan Danielson and a women’s title match between “Timeless” Toni Storm and her former ally Mariah May, who turned on Storm last week in a bloody shock attack.
